Why is My Air Conditioner Making a Loud Buzzing Noise?

We’re all familiar with the gentle sound produced by air conditioning units when they’re functioning properly. Sometimes, however, that soft purring becomes a distracting, irritating buzz, and it’s important to understand the possible reasons behind such an occurrence. Buzzing can result from a one-time issue, or it can be the product of long-term wear and tear on the internal or external components.

It should be noted that buzzing air conditioning units aren’t just annoying. They’re also inefficient and can lead to the need for costly replacement. There can be safety concerns, as well.

The possibilities are several. Let’s look at some of them.

Component Trouble

Fortunately, one of the more common reasons behind buzzing is also one of the least expensive to remedy. If the contactor relay switch has stopped functioning, that can be the culprit. This switch controls the flow of electricity to the compressor.

Electrical connection issues are another possible reason for the buzzing. Connections can become loose, and this can be a result of age or jarring of the unit. These improper connections can cause short circuits in your home and are also a fire hazard.

There could, of course, be a general malfunction with the compressor itself. Additionally, a damaged condenser fan motor could be at fault.

Loose parts within the unit also could be to blame. A single loose part can damage surrounding components. Additionally, dirt or a foreign object might have found its way inside the unit, causing problems in much the same manner.

The Unit’s Seating

Sometimes you’ll discover that the rubber feet that support the air conditioner have eroded with time or exposure to the elements. This can lead to an imbalance of the unit, which can cause a problematic sound.

Freezing Up

There’s also a possibility that the unit has frozen up. Potential reasons for this are restricted airflow and refrigerant leaks. It’s possible that you’ll see resultant ice in or on the unit itself in such a case.

What To Do

Using an improperly working air conditioner can lead to further damage, greater expense, and safety issues. But keep in mind that repairing an A/C unit and the electrical components therein should always be left to the professionals. If buzzing occurs, turn off your air conditioner immediately and call for assistance.
